How do ASME Sec. I safety valves work? 
ASME Sec. I safety valves are designed for steam service on power boilers in accordance with ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section I. They automatically open when steam pressure exceeds the set limit, releasing excess steam to protect the boiler.
